How To Begin Collecting Art

Art collecting can be a rewarding and fulfilling hobby or investment. Here are some key points to consider if you’re interested in starting or expanding your art collection:

1. Define Your Taste

  • Explore different styles and mediums (paintings, sculptures, photography, etc).

  • Visit galleries, museums and art fairs to expose yourself to various artists and art works. Go to art openings and artist talks. Get to know the artists in your area. Find out about them, what inspires them. Connecting with a good backstory is key to finding art that resonates with you.

2. Set a Budget

  • Determine how much you’re willing to spend on art.

  • Remember that collecting can include smaller works or prints that fit within your budget.

3. Consider Your Purchase Options

  • Art can be purchased directly from the artist, from galleries, art auctions, private sales, antique shops and online platforms.

4. Think About Display

  • Consider how and where you will display your art. Proper lighting and framing can enhance the artwork’s appeal.

5. Get Out There

  • Connect with other collectors, artists and art professionals.

  • Attend art events to meet others that share your passion.

6. Document Your Collection

  • Keep detailed records of each piece, including receipts, provenance and artist information. This is essential for insurance and futures sales.

7. Enjoy the Process

  • This is the most important tip I can give to you. Collect art that resonates with you personally. Remember sometimes it’s love at first sight but sometimes you just find it very interesting. Stay open. If a piece peaks your interest, it most likely will bring long-term enjoyment.

Quite often a collection finds you. One of my very first clients fell in love with a photograph by Lisa Spindler. We visited her studio, she and her husband met with the artist, got to know her a bit, and the rest is history. She’s now the proud owner of six Lisa Spindler photographs that look stunning in her home. This client checked at the boxes I mentioned in tip #1.
